User Mode File Servers
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent releases of the UNIX operating system provide support for network file systems. Network file systems extend the hierarchical file system name space by allowing remote file systems to appear as sub-trees within the local file system. In this article we show how the basis of a user mode file server which supports such a network file system may also be used as a server for a variety of other, non-standard, file system types.

Efficient methodology for implementation of Encrypted File System in User Space
The Encrypted File System (EFS) pushes encryption services into the file system itself. EFS supports secure storage at the system level through a standard UNIX file system interface to encrypted files. User can associate a cryptographic key with the directories they wish to protect. Files in these directories (as well as their pathname components) are transparently encrypted and decrypted with ...
متن کاملAnalysis of Delivery of Web Contents for Kernel-mode and User-mode Web Servers
In this paper, the architecture of kernel-mode and user-mode webservers and the constraints that affect their performance are studied. A set of experiments have been performed to measure and analyze performance of kernel-mode and user-mode web servers on an open source Scientific Linux CERN platform. Web servers under study include kernel-mode TUX web server and user-mode Apache web server for ...
متن کاملHigh-Performance Memory-Based Web Servers: Kernel and User-Space Performance
Web server performance has steadily improved since the inception of the World Wide Web. We observe performance gains of two orders of magnitude between the original process-based Web servers and today’s threaded Web servers. Commercial and academic Web servers achieved much of these gains using new or improved event-notification mechanisms and techniques to eliminate reading and copying data, b...
متن کاملBigfoot - NFS : A Parallel File - Striping NFS Server ( Extended
Bigfoot-NFS allows the transparent use of the aggregate space of multiple NFS file servers as a single file system. By presenting a single apparent file system to the user, Bigfoot-NFS allows the use of available storage without the maintenance overhead of tracking multiple mounted file systems. Unlike most other network parallel file systems, Bigfoot-NFS runs without a central “metadata” serve...
متن کاملA Light-weight, Temporary File System for Large-scale Web Servers
Several recent studies have pointed out that file I/Os can be a major performance bottleneck for some large Web servers. Large I/O buffer caches often do not work effectively for large servers. This paper presents a novel, lightweight, temporary file system called TFS that can effectively improve I/O performance for large servers with small cost. TFS is a much more cost-effective scheme than th...
